Although not all my reviews are spoilery, which I do not consider this one to be, here is a little warning just in case.

Angel Fire by L.A. Weatherly

The vampire craze is ending. It may have taken us a few years, but I feel we are a stronger and better people as a result. As one door closes, another opens and there is a new craze sweeping the young adult fiction world and that, is angels. It’s been bubbling away, under the surface for a while but suddenly a host of angel novels have surfaced. Becca Fitzpatrick has brought us Hush Hush [review of Silence], Lauren Kate brought us Fallen (and those sequels), Beautiful Dead, Kissed by an Angel; you get the idea. Although a book about angels, L.A.Weatherly has done something remarkably different.

You see, these angels are evil. I’m not talking fallen angels, I’m talking angels that feed off humans and leave the person with ‘angel burn’ – results tackled in the book include cancer & memory loss. Eerily, the person will worship these angels until the day they die.
This is a review of book two. Book one introduced us to Willow Fields, half angel (even though it’s supposed to be impossible) who tries to destroy the Church of Angels with her AK boyfriend (that’s angel killer) Alex Kylar. Angel Fire picks up where Angel finished, though I recommend you read that one first to get a feel of the characters. Willow and Alex are on the run as supposed terrorists and head straight to Mexico. Here, they bump into Alex’s friend, and old love interest, Kara who is currently training angel killers. They also bump into someone else.

Paranormal teen novels are known for their love triangles. I often sit back with a look of surprise on my face if this fails to happen but in this novel it is not cliché. You see, I feel sorry for the other boy in the love triangle – Seb. He has an unrequited love on Willow, seeking her for his whole life because he too, is a half angel. Hardly any author ever seems to touch on unrequited love in novels – it’s not exactly the most positive topic in the world and books are a form of escapism and for this reason, I warmed to Seb. I was also left with the dilemma of not knowing who I wanted Willow to end up with, regardless of how much I liked Alex.

Quick plot summary – the most important 12 angels in 'angel kind' are visiting Earth, planning bad things and they need to be removed. Either removing these angels will get rid of them all or will be the start of something disastrous but the group of angel killers take it upon themselves to attack the twelve and find out. For you to find out, you must read the book. Weatherly writes remarkably well – Willow doesn’t annoy me as most teen ‘heroines’ do because she has a mind of her own. Alex, although overprotective isn’t unbearably, so no alarm bells started ringing attracting the attention of the feminist within me.

Thankfully, the curse of the sequels is not applicable here. The book was just as good as the first, with a few surprises thrown in. A bittersweet ending leading the way perfectly for the final book in October. I’ll be sad to see this series finish.

Little extra for you-
Favourite Line: “You have a very nice nose, are you aware of this fact?” Page 404. Faith, that I am not the only one in the world who judges a man’s attractiveness on his nose.
