'Devour in an Hour' #2

Although not all my reviews are spoilery, which I do not consider this one to be, here is a little warning just in case.

Review Written: 10th March 2012

The Name of The Star by Maureen Johnson

Okay. I am officially creeped out.
Any book about Jack the Ripper creeps me out actually.

This book focuses on 16 year old Aurora, or more commonly known as Rory, who arrives at boarding school in London from Louisiana. Unfortunately, “Rippermania” has struck London. Someone is going around and copying everything the Ripper does. And by everything, I mean everything – same place, same time, same horrific afflictions and sometimes, the same name.
Every teen book needs good friends – Jazza is the roommate, later joined by Boo (you’ll find out why she’s a late arrival). Every teen book needs a token bitch – welcome Charlotte. Most importantly, every teen book needs a love interest – Yes, I’m talking to you Jerome. And he is very interested in “Rippermania” – 1) he’s becoming a journalist 2) It adds an element of suspicion.
Rory does not go out to intentionally stop the Ripper. Everyone knows when and where the murders are going to happen and yet, no-one seems to be able to catch him. Maybe the killer isn’t human after all? Maybe she needs a team of people to help her?

Apart from being really creeped out, I loved it. I bought it from Waterstones on World Book Day for a £1, and may I say, greatest pound I’ve ever spent. I read the book in one sitting. The characters are likeable, the plot is fast paced AND Johnson has done her research on London (and the Underground train system) and on Jack the Ripper himself...or herself...seeing as no-one knows who he/she was.
I am looking forward to the next one very much.
